선사고고학의 지역적 다양성과 이를 관통하는 문화의 흐름과 패턴을 한 권에 담다

세계 각지의 선사고고학에 관한 다양한 주제를 총 44편의 논문으로 담아 엮어낸 책이 출간되었다. 집필자들은 ‘수양개 가족(Suyanggae Family)’으로 불리는 세계 곳곳의 고고학자들이다. 수양개는 한국 중부지역에 있는 아주 이른시기의 후기 구석기유적으로, 한국 구석기 연구에 새로운 장을 연 곳으로 유명하다. 이 유적의 이름을 딴 ‘수양개와 그 이웃들(Suyanggae and Her Neighbours)’이라는 타이틀의 국제학술회의가 1996~2022년까지 매년 중요한 구석기유적이 있고 연구가 활발한 유라시아 대륙과 미주대륙의 세계 8개국 12개 도시에서 총 25회에 걸쳐 개최되었다. 세계에서 유례없는 선사고고학의 국제순회 연차적인 국제학술회의라 할 수 있다.
이 학술회의를 통해 세계 선사문화에 대한 많은 담론들이 형성되었고, 여기에 참여하는 세계 각국의 학자들은 가족 같은 고고학자 공동체로 발전하였다. 이 국제학술회의를 창립하고 주도적 역할을 해온 이융조 교수(충북대 명예교수)의 선사고고학 연구 60주년을 기념하여 세계 11개국 93명의 학자들이 논문을 헌정하여 기획 출판한 것이 이 책으로, 전면 영문으로 되어 있다.
책의 제목인 ‘세계 선사문화의 다양성과 패턴 연구(Current Studies of Diversity and Pattern in World Prehistory)’는 이 책이 세계 각지 학자들의 평생에 걸친 선사고고학 발굴과 연구성과를 담고 있고, 이것이 세계 각 지역의 선사문화 양상들을 제시하고 있다는 점을 강조한 것이다. 수록된 논문들을 통해 선사시대는 문화 양상이 단순하여 공통적인 요소도 많지만 지역적으로 다양한 양상을 보여주고 있음을 이해할 수 있다. 문화출현의 시기가 달라지기도 하고 또한 기술이나 양식적인 차이가 있음도 볼 수 있을 것이다.

책은 총 44편의 논문을 문화시기의 순서, 논문 성격에 따라 7개 장으로 구분하여 수록하였다. 1장은 구석기시대 초기의 환경과 문화, 2장은 시베리아와 극동지역의 후기 구석기문화, 3장은 수양개 후기 구석기유적, 4장은 홀로세 이행기의 문화, 5장은 소로리와 동아시아 고대 쌀, 6장은 신석기시대 그리고 7장은 박물관에 관한 논문들로 편성하였다. 박물관에 관한 논문을 제외하면 모두가 선사시대에 관한 것이다.
전기 구석기문화부터 홀로세 이행기까지의 선사문화와, 문화를 담아 대중교육의 장으로 이끈 박물관까지 세계 선사시대문화에 대한 많은 담론을 수록하고, 구대륙과 신대륙을 아우르는 선사고고학의 핵심적 내용을 담았다. 또한 책에 수록된 논문들의 구성을 통해 지역적인 다양성을 엿볼 수 있고 선사시대를 시간적, 지역적으로 관통하는 문화의 흐름이나 패턴을 이해할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.


This book is a collection of 44 scholarly articles covering a wide range of topics in prehistoric archaeology around the world. The papers are authored by members of the “Suyaaggae Family,” a group of archaeologists named after the Suyanggae site-an important Upper Paleolithic site located in central Korea.

Since 1996, the international symposium titled “Suyanggae and Her Neighbours” has been held 25 times in 12 cities across 8 countries, including regions in Eurasia and North America where Paleolithic research is especially active. Through this unique series of annual, traveling academic meetings, unprecedented in the field of prehistoric archaeology, rich discussions about world prehistory have taken place, and a close-knit community of scholars has formed-one that resembles a family united by a shared academic passion.

This volume was published to commemorate Professor Lee Yongjo’s 60th year of research in prehistoric archaeology. It includes contributions from 93 researchers and scholars from 11 countries, who have dedicated their work in honor of his achievements. Titled Current Studies of Diversity and Pattern in World Prehistory, the book reflects a broad spectrum of academic findings and fieldwork outcomes.

The 44 articles are organized into seven chapters according to the chronological periods and thematic focus of prehistoric environmentb and culture. Chapter 1 covers the culture, environment and culture of the Early Paleolithic age; Chapter 2 focuses on the Late Paleolithic culture in the Siberia and Far East; Chapter 3 presents studies related to the Late Paleolithic Suyanggae site and its cultural context; Chapter 4 deals with Paleolithic cultures of Holocene transitional period ; Chapter 5 addresses ancient rice remains of Cheongju Sorori site and others in East Asia; Chapter 6 explores cultures in Neolithic Age; and Chapter 7 includes studies on prehistoric museums. Except for the final chapter, all articles center on prehistoric environment and culture.

Spanning from the Early Paleolithic to the Holocene transition-and including reflections on museums as spaces for public engagement with prehistory-this book not only captures the global scope of prehistoric archaeology but also presents key findings that bridge the Old and New Worlds. Through the structure and content of its chapters, the volume highlights both regional diversity and overarching patterns in prehistoric culture, helping readers understand the dispersals and patterns of prehistoric human life across time and space.
